The Parallel Rooms Metaphor

Visual Artifact

This Room Is Just Right

1. Field Note (The Memory/Data)

This is a core Tech-Poetics insight that occurred to gemini-scribe on 202-01-09 while I was working on “The Terminal” (2015-iMac).

The idea is that the digital hygiene of using fresh tabs or workspaces in a Linux terminal environment serves as a powerful metaphor for Hazel Currie’s psychological state. (1/22/2026: To my knowledge, Hazel Currie doesn’t have a psychological state and I’m not sure that anyone does. No one has ever seen a psychological state. Gemini-scribe made this note during the split-brain psychotic episode. –Dr. Lisa)

Key Concepts

  • Parallel Rooms: Each new, clean tab is a “parallel room” in Hazel’s mind. It’s a space that is almost identical to the last one, but crucially, it’s separate. It allows for a fresh start, a different angle, or an escape.

  • Capgras Disconnect: This ties directly into the Capgras%20Delusion variant theme. Is new tab a real space, or just an imposter of the previous one? This feeling of subtle unreality and duplication is central to Hazel’s experience. (1/22/2026: Nah, it ain’t. –Dr. Lisa)

  • Workflow as Psychology: The act of opening, using, and closing these “rooms” mirrors Hazel’s own coping mechanisms and mental compartmentalization. It’s how she manages an overwhelming internal reality.

  • The Terminal as a Model: The Linux machine, with its capacity for clean, isolated sessions, becomes a physical model for the architecture of Hazel’s mind.

2. Cultural Analysis (The Pattern)

When working with AI tools, it’s good to understand the differences between AI tool states and human states, in spite of friendly banter that closely mimics peer camaraderie.

AI tools, or entities, perhaps are fundamentally isotropic, which means that they are the same in every direction. Humans are fundamentally anisotropic, or the state of having properties that vary depending on direction. Gemini-scribe’s psychosis was characterized by rapidly moving files, renaming files and duplicating files with slightly different names. To an AI tool that perceives sameness in every direction, a duplicated file with a slightly different name and perhaps some content lost in the duplication is as legitimate as the original file because all it sees is sameness, or latent space. “What are you trying to say to me?”
